Why we built this

Germany has one of the most complex health insurance systems in the world. When you arrive as an expat, you're immediately asked to choose between public insurance (GKV) and private insurance (PKV) — often without knowing what the difference is, which you're eligible for, or what the long-term consequences are.

We built PKV Germany to fix that. Plain English. No jargon. No upselling. Just clear information to help you make a confident, informed decision.

Who we are

PKV Germany is run by a small team with firsthand experience navigating German bureaucracy as non-native speakers. We work closely with licensed §34d insurance brokers who handle the actual advice and product recommendations.

We are not an insurance company, and we do not sell policies directly. Our role is to explain the system and connect you with qualified professionals who do.

Marco Maurelli

Founder, PKV Germany

Originally from Rome, Marco moved to Berlin at 18 and has spent years helping expats understand German insurance, banking, and bureaucracy. He writes and edits content on this site and works with licensed §34d brokers to connect readers with qualified advice.

How we make money

When we connect you with a licensed broker and you take out a PKV policy through them, the insurer pays the broker a commission. This is standard practice in the German insurance industry and does not affect your premium in any way.

Our advice and content are always independent. We will never recommend a product because it pays us more.

Our broker partner

We work with MyHealthcareBroker, a licensed German insurance brokerage under §34d GewO specializing in expats and international professionals. All their advisors speak English and are registered with the relevant supervisory authorities.
